Fedor Studit, Fedor Moroz

On this day, Orthodox Christians celebrate the memory of Theodore the Studite, a Byzantine monk who lived in the 8th and 9th centuries. Theodore was the son of an official and received a good education. Under the influence of his uncle, the abbot of the monastery, the young man took monastic vows. Together with Theodore, his wife Anna left the world and became a monk.

Subsequently, Theodore himself became abbot and gained fame as an ascetic and preacher of Christianity. He also denounced the vices of the rulers, defended shrines from iconoclasts, for which he was repeatedly persecuted and tortured. At the end of the 8th century, Theodore and his disciples settled in the Studite monastery, which gained great weight in the religious community.

The abbot developed strict regulations for the monastery, requiring compliance with the rules of community life and the tireless work of the brethren. Later, this charter was brought to Rus' and formed the basis for the charters of all Russian monasteries.

The nickname of Fyodor (Theodore) – Studite – was interpreted by the Russian people in their own way, calling the saint also Frost. “Fedor is chilling the earth,” people said. And, seeing the inevitable onset of winter, they added: “The cold from Studite is worse every day.” Wise people advised to spend this day at home – closer to the stove and hot cabbage soup. But the dampness on Fedor foreshadowed prolonged thaws until the Introduction.

Fedor was used to judge the future harvest of berries and mushrooms. If there were a lot of stars in the sky, it was possible to stock up on baskets and items for the summer. For the omen to come true, on this day they had to brew tea with dried berries – raspberries, strawberries, blueberries.
