Five female biscuit factory workers are missing and eight others have been injured after an explosion followed by a massive fire broke out at the production facility in Greece, Greek police told AFP.
An explosion occurred around 04:00 at this factory located near the city of Trikala in the center of the country, causing a major fire, according to a spokeswoman for the fire department.
Authorities have so far provided no details on the cause of the explosion at this well-known biscuit factory in Greece.
According to the firefighters contacted by France Presse, the fire extinguishing operation is ongoing and 40 firefighters with 13 special vehicles are mobilized.
The Violanta company, which produces biscuits, cookies and filled waffles sold under various brands, has a biscuit factory with a maximum annual capacity of 12,500 tonnes, according to its website.
According to state broadcaster ERT, the factory was operating at the time of the incident as it has a 24-hour production schedule.
