A man was fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday, nearly three weeks after a woman was killed in the same US city by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, according to CNN and The Guardian. The murdered man was a 37-year-old American citizen, the city's police chief said.

The Department of Homeland Security said Border Patrol agents acted in self-defense and fired on a man who approached them with a handgun and two magazines, Reuters wrote.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said the man was a 37-year-old resident of the city. He did not release his name, but noted that he was a legal gun owner and had no criminal record.

Law enforcement used tear gas and other crowd control tactics in an attempt to disperse angry protesters.

Protesters erected makeshift barricades, dragging dumpsters and trash cans through the streets to block access to parts of the area as tensions escalated.

Gov. Tim Walz's reaction

The Democratic governor of the US state of Minnesota, Tim Walz, announced shortly after that he had spoken with the White House after the “horrific armed attack by federal agents this morning”.

“Minnesota has had enough,” said Walz, who is running for vice president of the United States in 2024 on the team of Kamala Harris, Trump's opponent.

“The president needs to end this operation,” he added, referring to ICE's activities in the state.

The man killed Saturday morning is the third person shot by federal agents in Minneapolis this month.

On January 7, an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old woman, sparking nationwide protests.

A week later, an employee of the same facility shot a Venezuelan immigrant in the leg after what federal authorities described as a “targeted traffic stop.” The man, who the Department of Homeland Security said was resisting arrest, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
