The Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs asked the European Union on Saturday to copy the decision of US President Donald Trump to classify the anti -fascist movement as a “terrorist” group, AFP reports.
On Wednesday, the US leader announced that it will fit the antifa – a diverse movement that includes extremely left groups, but which does not have a clear leadership – as “a major terrorist organization”.
The Nationalist Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, is a key ally in Europe, and Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the Budapest government is “convinced that in such a crucial issue, Europe must line up with the US, the main force in the global fight against terrorism.”
Letter to the head of EU diplomacy
In a post on the X platform, Szijjarto published fragments from a letter he sent to the EU high for foreign affairs and security policy, Kaja Kallas, and requesting measures against Antifa.
“This extreme left -wing network has committed brutal attacks throughout Europe, including in Budapest. To our great regret, the suspects later avoided justice finding refuge in the EU states,” said the Hungarian official.
Szijjarto invoked the case of Italian Ilaria Saris, whom he claims to “acquired immunity after becoming a MEP.”
Salis was arrested with other activists in Budapest in February 2023, while participating in an annual commemoration of neonazists. She was chosen in the European Parliament a year later.
The antifa movement has appeared mainly after Trump started his first term in 2016. It does not have a leader or national organization and seems to be made up of “independent groups and individuals, with the same ideas”, according to an analysis of the 2020 Congress Research Service.
When she made the announcement on Wednesday, Trump described her as a “sick, dangerous movement, a radical left disaster.”
“I will also strongly recommend that those who finance the antifa be investigated thoroughly, in accordance with the highest legal standards and practices,” added the US president.
