The Decembrist will shower with “lights” already in February: how to care for a Christmas cactus for abundant flowering

The Christmas cactus, also known as Decembrist or Schlumbergera, does not always go into dormancy until the following year after flowering. EAOMedia news agency will tell you how to properly care for the plant so that it recovers and prepares for the next flowering, as well as what conditions need to be created.

When the Decembrist completes its flowering, it enters the resting phase. This is a natural stage in its life cycle, due to its origin in the tropical forests of Brazil, where periods of activity and rest alternate regularly. At this time, the plant accumulates energy for the subsequent flowering cycle.

After the holidays, many people forget about the cactus, believing that its active period has come to an end. However, if you do not provide it with proper care, the recovery process can be significantly slowed down, and the chances of re-blooming become unlikely.

Schlumbergera blooms during periods of active growth, which are followed by a dormant phase. After the plant has finished blooming, it needs to rest for several weeks. At this time, the lighting conditions and watering regime change for it – imitation of natural seasonal cycles.

If you provide a softer and warmer environment, new shoots will soon begin to grow. With a successful combination of circumstances, the plant can form buds again and bloom in late winter or early spring.

The result depends on the growing conditions. If you continue to water the plant generously after flowering and maintain a high temperature, it may actively grow leaves instead of forming buds.

Excessive light and heat during the dormant period can also interfere with the formation of flower buds.

Additionally, mature or frequently transplanted plants may respond to changes more slowly than younger plants.

Houseplant experts note that the Christmas cactus can recover faster if it is properly and regularly cared for. Moderate watering, diffused light and stable temperature help the plant to concentrate its energies on strengthening tissues and forming new shoots.

To keep the plant healthy, after flowering you need to remove faded flowers and trim the shoots. This will improve the shape of the bush. The plant should only be replanted if absolutely necessary and after flowering has completed. Watering should be sufficient, but do not forget to dry the top layer of soil. Fertilizing is carried out when new shoots appear.

The Christmas cactus can bloom again after the New Year holidays if you provide it with proper rest and proper care. For this, maintenance conditions, lighting and watering regime are important. However, there is no universal recipe for success. The result depends on the age of the plant and environmental conditions.
