Donald Trump's U-turn on Greenland. A telling reaction from the US president

Trump announced during a call with reporters after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutt that the new Greenland agreement would “satisfy everyone” and “give (America) everything it wants.” When asked if this also meant taking ownership of the island, Trump paused for a few secondsthen replied:

It's a long-term contract. This is the final long-term deal and I think it puts everyone in a very good position, especially when it comes to security and minerals and everything else – he said.

He added that the agreement would last “forever.”

Trump's changing narrative on Greenland

Just a few hours earlier, in his speech in Davos, the US president argued that the United States needed a “title of ownership” to Greenland because “ownership is needed to defend it” and “it cannot be defended on the basis of a lease agreement.”

When will the details of the Greenland agreement be published?

After the meeting with Rutt, Trump announced that the details of the agreement would be published soon and that negotiations on this matter were far advanced. He also praised Rutte's commitment.

— I think the Secretary General represented the other side, which actually means us too, because we are a very important member of NATO, he added.

In an interview for CNBC television the American president, in turn, said that he had a “concept of agreement”.

– I think this will be a very beneficial agreement for the United States, also for them, and we will work together on something that will concern the Arctic as a whole – he announced.

Trump previously wrote on his own social media platform, Truth Social, that a framework for a future agreement on Greenland and the entire Arctic region had been developed and that he withdrew from his announcement of imposing tariffs on countries that sent troops to Greenland.

If this solution is implemented, it will benefit the United States of America and all NATO countries” – Trump said. He added that additional discussions will concern the Golden Dome system. This is the project of a new anti-missile shield announced by Trump, which assumes placing some of its elements in space. It is to be an extension of the project initiated by Ronald Reagan, called the “Star Wars” program by journalists.
