“The total volume of mandatory reserves of natural gas maintained by the obligated entities pursuant to the decision of the President of the Energy Regulatory Office in the period from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026 is 15,125.7 GWh (i.e. approx. 1,378.5 million cubic meters)” – wrote the Ministry of Energy.

He added that 13,581.1 GWh of mandatory reserves of natural gas are maintained in domestic storage installations (i.e. approximately 1,237.8 million cubic meters), and in storage installations abroad 1,544.6 GWh, i.e. approximately 140.7 million cubic meters, which is 10.2%. total volume of mandatory stocks.

The Ministry of Energy reminded that maintaining mandatory reserves of natural gas abroad has been in the national legal system since 2011.

“Energy companies, including state entities, are taking advantage of this opportunity, as was the case in 2015-2023,” said the Minister of Energy.

He added that the Act of August 5, 2025 amending the Act on Stocks of Crude Oil, Petroleum Products and Natural Gas, vetoed by the President, contained solutions limiting the maintenance of mandatory stocks of natural gas abroad.

“The Act of August 5, 2025 adopted by the Sejm (…) limited the possibility of maintaining mandatory reserves of natural gas abroad, conditioning such a possibility with the need to obtain the consent of the minister responsible for the economy of energy raw materials. As a result of the veto of the President of the Republic of Poland, energy companies have freedom in choosing the location of mandatory reserves,” the ministry wrote.

At the same time, the ME pointed out that the investment consisting in the expansion of the underground gas storage facility UMG Wierzchowice from the current 1.3 billion cubic meters active capacity up to 2.1 billion cubic meters. is being implemented by Orlen and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

“Additionally, OGP GAZ-SYSTEM SA is investing in connecting the national transmission system (KSP) with the transit gas pipeline system (SGT) at the Wydartowo point. Completion in 2026 will enable the increase in the maximum reception capacity from MPG Mogilno by 10 million cubic meters per day (…) to 28 million cubic meters per day,” added the ME.

He noted that the implementation of the above-mentioned projects will enable achieving the goal indicated in the Polish Energy Policy by 2040, i.e. 4 billion cubic meters. active capacities and maximum reception power from storage installations of 60 million cubic meters. per day. (PAP Business)
