A strong fire broke out on Saturday evening at the villa of Admiral Dan Zaharia, a building symbol of the historical and architectural heritage of Stoenești commune, in Argeș county, reports the local website Epitești.
The fire broke out violently inside the villa, which was decommissioned, and was extinguished last night, around 02.00, after several hours of intervention by firefighters. According to ISU Argeș, there were no victims.
However, the flames seriously damaged the building with historical value, according to images published by witnesses on social networks.
“When the fire crews arrived, the fire manifested itself with an open flame both inside the building and on its roof, and it presented a danger of spreading to the annexes in the vicinity,” ISU Argeș reported, quoted by Epitești.
As a result of the fire, the roof and ceilings of the first and ground floor, being built of wooden beams, burned.
“When our colleagues arrived, these elements were in danger of collapsing, subsequently falling, which is why the intervention was difficult, and access inside the building was limited. The doors and windows of the building were also burnt, along with furniture elements inside two of the rooms”, stated ISU Argeș.
According to ISU Argeș, from the first investigations, “the probable cause of the fire outbreak was open fire in closed spaces”.
The villa in the Stoenești commune was built in the early 1920s by Admiral Dan Zaharia, an officer of the Romanian Navy. The building is considered a historical and local heritage monument, valued for its distinctive architecture.
During the communist period, the villa was nationalized and used as a camp, and after 1990 it returned to the owners, but it was not restored and deteriorated over time.
