US President Donald J. Trump makes statements when leaving the White House, in Washington, DC, US
US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the incursion of Russian drones into the Poland's airspace can be a “mistake”, writes Reuters and France Presse.
“It could have been a mistake,” Trump told journalists.
“I am not satisfied with anything from this situation, but I hope it will end,” the US president added in front of the reporters, before climbing the helicopter Marine One.
The remark of the leader from the White House, who seemed to find excuses for the action of Russia on the territory of a member country of the North Atlantic Alliance, followed an initial ambiguous response from Trump to the provocative act of Moscow-the incursion of the 19 drones that put NATO allies in Europe of the United States.
“What happens to Russia that violates Poland's airspace with drones? And we start, again!”, Trump posted on his social media platform, on Wednesday morning, almost half a day after Poland announced that 19 Russian drones entered his territory, during several hours.
Trump's commentary contradicted strongly with the vehement condemnation of Russia's gesture from several European leaders and was significantly less firm than his ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker.
“We are with our NATO allies in the face of these violations of the air space and we will defend every centimeter in NATO,” wrote Whitaker on Wednesday, in a message published on the social network X.
The aerial incursion of Russian drones on the territory of Poland took place in the context in which Trump strives to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in direct peace negotiations with Ukrainian leader Volodimir Zelenski to end the war over three and a half years in Russia in Ukraine.
