The United States was invited to participate in military exercises in Greenland, the head of the Danish Arctic Command said on Friday, stating that these exercises are related to Russia, reports AFP.

“Of course the United States, as a NATO member, is invited here,” General Soren Andersen told reporters from a Danish navy ship docked in the port of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.

The Danish officer said he had talked with NATO allies, including the Americans, that same day and invited them to “come here”.

He made the remarks as several European NATO countries, including France and Germany, but not the United States, sent soldiers to Greenland to prepare their armies for future cold-weather exercises in the Arctic.

The development comes amid tensions over the fate of the self-governing Danish territory, which President Trump has said he wants to conquer “one way or another”.

Many experts consider this as a “strategic signal” to Washington, notes Agerpres. But the White House said the development would have “no impact” on President Donald Trump's goal of “acquiring” Greenland.

“The exercises are related to Russia”

“From my point of view, it's related to Russia. It's about what's happening in Ukraine,” the Danish general said, referring to the exercises.

“We see how Russia is conducting the war in Ukraine, and when the war in Ukraine ends – hopefully with a favorable outcome for Ukraine – we believe that Russia will redistribute the resources it is currently using in Ukraine to other theaters of operations, including the Arctic,” he added.

Andersen also stated that he had not seen any Russian or Chinese warships in the region during his two and a half years in command on the island.

President Donald Trump insists that the US needs Greenland for its national security and to limit the advance of Russia and China in the Arctic.
