Robert Benton is dead. The American director and screenwriter was 92 years old


Robert Benton was a laureate of three Oscars – two for the film “Case of Kramers” from 1979 (the best director and the best script) and one for the script of the drama “Place in the heart” (1984). His subtle, based on the characters, stories brought him a reputation of the “director of the actors”. The stars that have: Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Newman or Sally Field, received Oscar nominations.

He also had his participation in the creation of “Superman” (1978) and the comedy “And what Doctor?” (1972). In the 21st century, Benton directed highly valued films, such as “Stig” (2003) – adaptation of Philip Roth's novel with Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman and “Taste of Love” (2007) with Morgan Freeman and Radha Mitchell.
He was also a winner of the Golden Globe and two awards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
Robert Benton was born in Texas in 1932. In childhood, he defeated dyslexia and learned to tell stories with a film. He began his career in the magazine “Esquire”, where he met his long -term colleague David Newman. In his work, family topics, identity and human immunity often appeared.
The director left his son. His wife, Sallie, died in 2023.
