France is debating the possibility of leaving NATO. The proposal, submitted to the Parliament

In France, the debate regarding the country's membership in NATO is rekindling, after an official proposal to withdraw from the alliance was submitted to the Parliament. The initiative belongs to the vice-president of the National Assembly, Clémence Guette, deputy of the left-wing formation La France Insoumise, Berliner Zeitung reports.

According to the German publication, taken over by Dialog.ua, Guette emphasized that the idea of leaving NATO is not new within his political formation, but the current international context would make it more urgent than ever.
Accusations against the US
The deputy accuses the United States of returning to o “imperial policy”acting increasingly outside the framework of international law and collective security mechanisms.
Guetté listed several examples that he considers relevant: Washington's pressure on European officials in matters related to the regulation of American digital companies, interference in electoral processes in European states, tough trade agreements imposed on the European Union, but also the recent threats regarding the annexation of Greenland.
The left-wing politician believes that all this would demonstrate that the US no longer treats Europe as an equal ally, but as a dependent partner.
According to the La France Insoumise member of parliament, a possible exit from NATO would allow France to fully regain its military and diplomatic independence. Guette insisted that the country already has a nuclear arsenal and sufficient capabilities to ensure its own national security.
The scenario is not entirely improbable
The Berliner Zeitung notes that the scenario is not entirely improbable, given the current configuration of the French Parliament. The center-left alliance of which La France Insoumise is a part currently has the largest faction, and right-wing parties have been criticizing NATO for years, especially through the voice of politician Marine Le Pen.
