Folk calendar

Savvin day. Old style date: December 5.

On this day the memory of St. Savva the Sanctified is celebrated.

In Rus' in former times they said that Savva continues Varvarin’s work – he freezes rivers and lakes, strengthening winter roads and crossings. There was a saying about this: “Varvara is paving, Savva is sharpening nails, Nikola is nailing.” People believed that on this day someone who has a horse should not swear, otherwise disaster might happen on the winter road.

In addition, Savva was not supposed to work for her. It was better to spend this day in prayers and godly conversations, so as not to offend the saint.

In Rus' they knew how to determine the weather without leaving their hut. On Savva, this could be done by looking at the fire in the stove: if it is red and the logs are crackling, it means there is a severe cold outside. On this day they also predicted the weather for the future: smoke in a column foreshadowed frost, smoke in a trail – bad weather. If smoke spread along the ground without wind, snowfall could be expected.
