Merging two countries in Europe into one? Now the Prime Minister has spoken


In an interview with the “Observatorul de Nord” daily, Munteanu noted that by supporting the scenario of unification of Moldova with Romania, he was only presenting a “personal view.”

– I, as Alexandru Munteanu, would vote for this idea – said the head of the Moldovan government. Munteanu noted that “for now, the most important goal” of Moldova is to join the European Union. “I think we're already doing more than necessary on this,” he added.

In an interview for the British podcast “The Rest is Politics” published on Sunday, Sandu once again spoke about her personal attitude to the possible unification of Moldova with Romania. She also noted that currently the majority of Moldovan society is against such a scenario.

In an interview for PAP on Thursday, Kamil Całus, an expert at the Center for Eastern Studies, said that Sandu's words about support for unification with Romania are nothing new. He emphasized that no changes in the current policy of Chisinau and Bucharest should be expected in the foreseeable future.

Before World War II, present-day Moldova was part of Romania; in June 1940, it was forcibly incorporated into the Soviet Union and transformed into one of the republics of the USSR. In 1991, Moldova declared independence.
