– I attach to everyone who condemns serious humanitarian violations in Gaza, where innocent civilians, imprisoned in the enclave, die of hunger and under bombs – said King Filip. – The current situation has been going too long. It is a disgrace for humanity – he added, supporting the appeal of the UN Secretary General for the urgent end of the “unbearable crisis”.
According to commentators, the king's statement is more firm than the official position of the Belgian government, which in recent months has been more restrained in this matter. As the VRT NWS journalists pointed out, although the monarch did not use the word “genocide”, its declaration was unambiguous and clearly accepted by the federal authorities.
Later in the speech, King Filip appealed for the stronger leadership of the European Union on the international arena. “Europe should be a bastion to the brutal struggle for power, which we are witnessing today,” he said. He called for loyalty to values such as democracy, justice and the rule of law.
The monarch also mentioned Ukraine, emphasizing the need to continue supporting its citizens in the fight for sovereignty. He also appealed to the establishment of a new government in the capital region of Brussels, where the coalition majority could not be created since the elections that took place over a year ago.
