The Ukrainian Air Force announced on Monday that Russia used a total of 156 unmanned aerial vehicles in the night attack, including: Shahed and Gerbera, 135 of which were shot down by air defense forces.

Russia is working on a new version of drones

On Sunday, the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) wrote in a report, citing data from Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR), that Russia has begun mass production and use of a new version of Gerber drones, a Russian modification of the Iranian Shahed-136. The Gerbera-5 variant was introduced into service in early January and has a range of approximately 1,000 km. kilometers.

According to HUR, Moscow is working on equipping these drones with R-73 missiles — Russian short-range air-to-air missiles considered among the most dangerous in their class.

“Russian forces are increasingly modifying Shahed/Geran-type drones to combat air elements of Ukrainian air defense, probably to increase the scale of destruction caused by long-range strikes in the face of constant innovations on the Ukrainian side,” ISW analysts said.

The institute added that, as in the case of earlier variants of Gerań drones, the production of Gerań-5 became possible thanks to the transfer of technology from Iran.
