The upholstery manufacturer for car seats Adient has announced that it will close its factory in Ploiesti. The planned restructuring would involve the gradual elimination of approximately 1,010 jobs, as well as the halt of production towards the middle of 2027, the company says, quoted by the publication Observatorul Prahovean.
Adient has 200 manufacturing facilities in 29 countries.
The company cites “decreasing consumer demand and the overall decline in market volumes” and says it has found “no viable option” to continue operating the plant.
Adient is a company spun off in 2016 from the Johnson Controls automotive component manufacturer group.
The company Adient had 1,800 employees in Poiești five years ago and announced in 2020 that it would increase its workforce by another 200 people, according to News.ro. In 2023, Adient announced that it would hire another 120 people in Prahova.
The unemployment rate in Prahova, in 2025, was 2.22%, being below the national average of 3.12%, according to AJOFM Prahova data.
Several car component manufacturers operate in Prahova, the best known being Yazaki.
What Adient says about the closure of the factory in Prahova
“The profound transformations at the level of the entire automotive industry have caused Adient to face significant commercial pressures and, in this context, the company anticipates the interruption of operations at the Ploiești plant,” the company reports.
“This approach has become necessary in order to be able to maintain the resilience and competitiveness of the company in the long term, given the ongoing economic challenges. The main factors are the uncertainty related to the pace of the transition to e-mobility, the decrease in consumer demand and the general decline in market volumes, in conjunction with increasing competition”, the Adient press release also reads.
