Winter hits Romania hard: the areas under the yellow code of snow, blizzard and frost

Snow has returned to much of the country, and meteorologists warn that days of particularly cold weather, strong winds and blizzards are ahead. The southern half is under a snow and blizzard code yellow, where 5 to 15 centimeters of snow will fall and temperatures will drop to -15 degrees. The capital and several regions are subject to frost warnings, and the first traffic problems have already appeared in Constanța county.

The general director of ANM, Elena Mateescu, explained to Digi24 that until 12:00 a yellow code is in effect for seven counties in the south and southeast. “We expect precipitation in the form of snow, snow of 10–15 cm, but at the same time wind intensifications with speeds of 50–60 km/h, on the coast possible gusts of 70 km/h. Temporarily it will be blizzard and reduced visibility below 100 metersshe said.
At the same time, another yellow code, valid until Monday morning at 10:00, covers Banat, Crișana, Maramureș, Transylvania, Moldova and the mountain area. “We are talking about particularly low temperatures and frost, the maximums of the day between -10 and -2 degrees, and during the nights and mornings the minimum temperatures between -15 and -6 degrees and, certainly, in the conditions in which we will also record intensification of the wind, the feeling of cold will be greatly amplified“, added Elena Mateescu.
Bucharest, under weather information: snow, ice and frost
The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) announces that, between January 11, 01:30 a.m. and January 13, 10:00 a.m., the city of Bucharest is subject to a meteorological information message for particularly cold weather, mixed precipitation and hail, snow and snow cover. At 01:30, the thickness of the snow layer deposited in the Capital was on average 3-4 cm, and the minimum temperature was -5…-4 degrees.
For the interval January 11, 08:00 – January 12, 08:00, meteorologists forecast cloudy skies and light snow, with the deposition of a layer of snow of 2-4 cm. The wind will blow weak to moderate, the maximum of the day will be -4…-3 degrees, and the minimum -6…-5 degrees. Between January 12, 08:00 and January 13, 10:00, the weather will remain particularly cold: changeable skies, light to moderate wind, with a maximum around -1 degree and minimum between -10 and -8 degrees.

The first effects in Constanța: blocked road and snowy cars
The yellow code has already started to create problems in Constanța county. The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations announced that on Sunday, at 05:40, the county road DJ391A, between the towns of Şipote and Văleni, was temporarily blocked due to winter conditions. Equipment was used in the area, and traffic was safely resumed.
Also, eight cars were stuck in the snow in the towns of Crucea, Dobromir, Tariverde, Mihai Viteazu and Cogealac and were unblocked with the support of the town halls and the Autonomous County Roads and Bridges Directorate, according to News.ro. The authorities stated that there are no other national or county roads blocked and that there are currently no ongoing interventions.
Constanța County is under a yellow code until Sunday at 12:00, and meteorologists are announcing quantitatively significant snowfall, with snow deposits of 10-15 cm.
