A French court on Friday sentenced Jean-Paul to a six-month suspended prison term and a fine for the November 29 incident, when he smashed an egg on the head of Jordan Bardella, the leader of France's far-right National Reunion (RN) party, according to AFP and Le Monde.
According to the decision, the 74-year-old retired farmer, identified in court as Jean-Paul, must pay a fine of 1,000 euros, as well as damages of 500 euros to Jordan Bardella for the damage caused to his image, but also the sum of 600 euros, representing court costs.
Montauban public prosecutor Bruno Savage had asked for an eight-month prison sentence – four of which would be suspended – for Jean-Paul, who was convicted in 2022 after throwing an egg at former presidential candidate Eric Zemmour while he was campaigning.
In court, Jean-Paul apologized for the gesture in November, one he admitted was “violent” but said he wanted to “warn the citizens that we are sleeping”.
“Once they are in power, it will be too late,” the man said, referring to the far right.
On November 29, as the RN leader was launching his new book at an event in Moissac, Jean-Paul sat in the autograph queue and smashed an egg on his head when it approached him.
