Krasnoyarsk residents were told which fish becomes a “table favourite”

In Russia in 2025, the fish products market has changed significantly in the structure of consumption. Sales of fish and seafood are down from 2024 levels, with shoppers increasingly choosing more affordable options, according to analytics firms. This was reported by the Ural Meridian news agency.

According to the publication, the price of cod has increased significantly. This caused its sales to decline by 60% in both volume and revenue. As a result, pollock replaced cod, the demand for which increased by 20% by weight and by 45% in monetary terms. Thus, pollock is once again becoming a table favorite among Russians. Sales of surimi products, known as “crab sticks,” also increased, with an increase of 9% in kind and 19% in value.

Despite the desire to save money, residents continue to buy fish fillets, especially trout and tuna. Last year, sales of tuna fillets increased by 67%, and pollock and trout fillets were also in high demand. Consumption of frozen trout increased by 30%, and salmon by 14%. Stable interest in shrimp remains, with mussels showing a slight increase. Sales of canned tuna increased by 35%, and the popularity of Tom Yum soup doubled.

In 2026, Russian fishermen expect the total catch to reach 5 million tons. Experts are considering two scenarios: a conservative one, in which fish imports will remain unchanged, and a pessimistic one, which assumes its reduction. Market dynamics will be influenced by the key rate of the Central Bank, fluctuations in the ruble exchange rate, as well as external factors: pressure from unfriendly states and difficulties with international payments.

In the first three quarters of 2025, the volume of fish imports to Russia exceeded the previous year. In particular, supplies of frozen salmon and Atlantic herring doubled, mussels increased by 30%, and import volumes of shrimp and trout remained at the same level. At the same time, imports of Atlantic mackerel fell by 43%.

The recovery in imports, which began in 2023 after a significant decline due to logistics constraints, slowed in 2024 but is slightly improving in 2025. This was influenced by the adaptation of importers and increased domestic demand. The main suppliers of fish to Russia remain China (17%), Chile (12%), Turkey (11%), Faroe Islands (9%) and India (4%).
