Hundreds of commercial flights to and from Puerto Rico, Aruba and other Caribbean destinations were canceled or delayed Saturday after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued restrictions on certain portions of the airspace for security reasons.
American airlines had to adjust flight schedules and inform passengers about the schedule changes, reports Axios.
American Airlines said it is closely monitoring the situation with the FAA and adjusting schedules to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
In parallel, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways reported delays and numerous canceled flights.
For example, JetBlue announced the cancellation of approximately 215 flights “due to airspace closures related to military activities”, but noting that routes to the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are not affected.
At many airports, including Miami International Airport, officials have confirmed multiple flight cancellations, and operators are advising passengers to constantly check airline websites and contact travel agencies for updated information.
Restrictions are usually temporary, but in the context of military activities they can last several days, affecting hundreds of flights and thousands of passengers.
The chaos at Caribbean airports was caused by restrictions imposed after the United States launched attacks on Venezuela early Saturday morning, January 3, and announced the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
