The American actor George Clooney, his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney and their two children received French citizenship, according to a naturalization decree published on Saturday in the Official Gazette, France Presse reports on Monday.
Revealed by Paris Match, the decree refers to the Alamuddin Clooney couple and their eight-year-old twins, Agerpres cites.
Away from Hollywood, the actor, known for his iconic roles on “ER” and the “Ocean's” films, and his Lebanese-British wife, a lawyer by profession, spend part of their lives in France.
“I like French culture, your language, even if I'm just as stupid after 400 days of lessons,” the 64-year-old actor and director told RTL in early December.
The couple purchased a Provençal house and vineyard in Brignoles, a town in the Var department, in 2021.
“There are no pictures of our children being taken here. There are no paparazzi lurking outside the school gates. This is essential for us,” he added.
Even though the Clooneys don't spend all their time in the south of France, the estate is “the happiest place for us,” said the actor, who won an Oscar for Syriana (2005).
Meanwhile, his compatriot, director Jim Jarmusch, announced on Friday on France Inter radio his intention to apply for French citizenship. “I'd love to have another place to escape from the United States,” he said, explaining his attraction to “French culture.”
