“Flying carpets – Thomas Ruff & Transilvania & Anatolia”, curated by Erwin Kessler, is open at the National Art Museum of Romania, part of the new exhibition season, until February 28, 2026.

The exhibition discusses tradition and modernity. The tradition, through carpets by Transylvania Anatolian, and modernity, through carpets made with new technologies by photographer Thomas Ruff. This is the first time that his type of such works are exposed in a museum.

The Carpets of Transylvania were anatolian prayer carpets, which were exported through Transylvania to Western Europe since the 16th century, as explains Erwin Kessler. This “spiritual merchandise” has become aesthetic and such fabrics can be seen even in Pains of Caravaggio and Vermeer, among others.
