Roses will not freeze in winter: during the November thaw I cover them with this in 2 layers – even at -30°C the buds are intact

When November brings surprises in the form of thaws, it's time to take care of roses. It is during this period that proper shelter determines whether the bushes will survive the harsh winter. The secret of success is multi-layer protection made of lutrasil, which creates a stable microclimate even with sudden temperature changes.

Lutrasil allows air to pass through, but retains cold and prevents damping off. Two layers with a density of 60 g/m² create an air layer that works like a thermos. The material does not rot, does not get wet and protects from icy winds.

Step by step instructions:

Preparation of bushes

After the first frosts, I cut the shoots to a height of 40-50 cm. For climbing roses, I carefully bend the stems to the ground, securing them with metal staples. I hill the base of the bush with dry soil or compost to a height of 20 cm.

Cover in two layers

I throw the first layer of lutrasil directly onto the bushes, leaving gaps for breathing. With the second layer I completely cover the roses along with the root zone. I press the edges of the material with bricks or boards.

Wind protection

I put down spruce branches – it traps the snow and further strengthens the structure. For standard roses I make a frame from wooden stakes, which I cover with material.

Important details:

  • Cover only in dry weather;
  • When there is a thaw, open the ends slightly for ventilation;
  • Remove the cover gradually, layer by layer, when stable heat is established.

Do not use plastic film under any circumstances; it creates a greenhouse effect. You should not cover the bushes too early, before stable frosts: this disrupts the natural preparation of plants for winter. Be sure to leave an air gap between the layers of shelter: without it, the plants will not be able to breathe and will begin to rot even in frost. Remember: the right shelter should protect from the cold, but at the same time maintain natural air circulation.
