Adriano (43 years old), the former great striker of Brazil and legendary clubs such as Inter, Rome and Parmahas once again gone viral on social media. Nicknamed “The King”, he appeared on Instagram in a video clip in which he dances relaxed in the streets of Rio de Janeiro, with a friend, in a typical favela atmosphere, to live music, guitar, vocals and drums.

Considered one of the greatest strikers of the 2000s, Adriano conquered Italy with his technique and devastating execution, becoming the idol of Inter Milan fans. However, his career went into a dramatic decline after the death of his father, a moment that permanently changed his life and career path.

Today, at 43, the former Brazilian international lives in the Vila Cruzeiro favela, one of the most notorious and dangerous areas of Rio de Janeiro.

Not long ago, Adriano made a shocking statement: “The biggest waste in football is me”

A little over a year ago, the Brazilian published a disturbing confession, entitled “A letter to my favela”, in which he spoke openly about depression, alcohol and the painful feeling of a missed promise:

The biggest waste in football is me. I like this word, waste. Not just because of how it sounds, but because I'm obsessed with the idea of wasting my life. It's not easy to be a broken promise, especially at my age.”

The drama that marked him definitively was the death of his father, shot in the head during a party in Vila Cruzeiro, an incident that led to frequent convulsions and, finally, his death in 2004.

“Have you ever seen a person have a seizure in front of you? It's scary. Since then, my family's life has not been the same,” Adriano confessed.

Loneliness overwhelmed him even during his glory days at Inter, and homesickness and suffering pushed him to alcohol:

“I went to Milan for a specific reason. It was what I had dreamed of all my life. God made it possible for me to become a footballer in Europe.”

Whenever he spoke to his mother on the phone and heard his aunt's loud drumming in the background, he would start to cry: “They finished me. I got a bottle of vodka. I'm not exaggerating. I drank all this shit by myself. I filled my ass with vodka. I cried all night. I passed out on the couch after drinking and cried so much.”

Adriano Leite Ribeiro, in his full name, became a four-time champion of Italy with Inter Milan. In 2004 he led Brazil to the Copa America and became the best player and top scorer of the tournament.

A year later he achieved the same feat at the Confederations Cup in Germany and was voted the world's top scorer in 2005. In 2006 he was supposed to lead Brazil to the world title, but the Seleçao failed in the “quarters”. Adriano retired from football for good in May 2016, from Miami United.
