Macron wants to talk to Putin: “We have an interest in finding a framework to properly re-engage in this discussion”

President Emmanuel Macron said on Friday, December 19, that it would be “useful again” to talk with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, following the current US efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

“I think it will be useful to talk to Vladimir Putin again”he told the media at the end of a summit in Brussels where the European Union reached an agreement to release 90 billion euros to support Kiev, writes Agerpres.
“I notice that there are people talking to Vladimir Putin“, he added, alluding in particular to US President Donald Trump who, after returning to power in January, resumed contact with the Kremlin leader.
“So, I think that we, the Europeans and the Ukrainians, have an interest in finding a framework to properly re-engage in this discussion. Otherwise, we will discuss among ourselves with negotiators who will then go alone to discuss with the Russians, which is not ideal”insisted Emmanuel Macron.
On Thursday, Trump urged Ukraine to “move quickly” in negotiations on a plan to end the conflict with Russia.
Negotiators “I am close to an agreement, but I hope that Ukraine will move quickly. (…) Every time it takes too long, Russia changes its mind”said the president of the United States during an exchange of views with the press in the Oval Office, according to the foreign press agency, quoted by Agerpres.
A meeting between Russian and American emissaries on the war in Ukraine is scheduled to take place this weekend in Miami, Florida.
