Szymon Hołownia informed about submitting an application for the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in mid-September. In mid-November – as diplomatic sources told the Polish Press Agency – Hołownia was on the short list and one of the three main candidates for this position.
The UN Secretary-General is responsible for the selection of the High Commissioner for Refugees, who, after announcing the recruitment and vetting of candidates, nominates one or one of them for approval by the UN General Assembly. UNHCR's term of office is five years.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is now Italian diplomat Filippo Grandi, who has held the position since January 2016 – his current term ends on December 31, 2025. UNHCR is currently responsible for the protection of almost 130 million forcibly displaced and stateless people around the world.
