An adventurous raccoon entered a liquor store in Virginia, USA, over the Thanksgiving weekend and started drinking, only to pass out on the store's restroom floor.

After a few hours of sleep and “with no signs of injury”, the animal was released into the wild, “hoping that it learned” from its mistake, reported an animal shelter that recovered the intoxicated raccoon from the liquor store, writes France 24 on Thursday.

The “masked” thief broke into the Virginia liquor store, which was closed, early Saturday morning and reached the bottom shelf where the scotch and whiskey were stored. The raccoon turned out to be more of a threat: bottles were broken, a ceiling tile collapsed and alcohol spilled on the floor.

During the morning, an Ashland, Virginia liquor store employee found the little thug passed out on the bathroom floor at the end of his drinking spree.

“Personally, I like raccoons,” said Samantha Martin, a local animal control officer. “They're funny creatures. He fell through one of the ceiling tiles and went on a rampage, drinking everything he could find,” she said.

Martin also said he took the raccoon back to the animal shelter and had a lot of fun on the way. “Just another day in the life of an animal control officer, I guess,” she said.

The Hanover County Animal Shelter praised Martin for her handling of the “break-in” at the store and confirmed the raccoon had recovered.

“After a few hours of sleep and no signs of injury (other than a possible hangover and poor life choices), he was safely released back into the wild, hopefully learning that breaking and entering is not the answer,” the agency said.
