The Budapest football forum records the disappearance of the one who was also the coach of the Hungarian national team.

“The former coach of the Hungarian national team, Imre Jenei (Emeric Ienei, editor's note), who led the national team between 1992 and 1993 and won the European Champions Cup in 1986 as coach of Stela Bucharest, died at the age of 88,” reads a text published on the website of the Hungarian Football Federation.

“Imre Jenei was born on March 22, 1937 in Bélegregy, Arad county. He started his career at Flamura Roșie Arad, winning two championship titles, then three more with Steaua Bucharest. He played 12 times for the Romanian national team between 1959 and 1964 and was a member of the squad that participated in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964,” writes FMF, which also mentions his track record as coach of Stella.

The record on the bench of the Hungarian national team

He made his debut on the bench for the Hungarian national team on 25 March 1992 in a 2–1 win against Austria. In 14 matches, he had a record of 6 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses.

Advisor to Orban

Former football coach Emeric Jenei was to be the main adviser to Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán Viktor on football issues, the RADOR news agency wrote in 2019.

This was stated by Jenei himself for the publication Gazeta Sporturilor, quoted by the Hungarian portal index.hu. The Hungarian technician from Romania is 82 years old and – because of his age – keeps in touch more by phone with the Hungarian prime minister, whom he has known for many years. Conversations between the two take place weekly, with Jena giving him advice on various football-related topics. According to the cited publication, Orbán hired Jenei because after Miercurea Ciuc and Sfântu Gheorghe he wants to build a football academy in Oradea, the city where the former coach lives. The two will soon discuss the details of this project.

Emeric Ienei died on Wednesday at the age of 88, according to Golazo.
