Almost 20 thousand cartridges were stolen from Bundeswehr stocks in Germany – media

Journalists write that the incident occurred on the night of November 25 near the hotel.

The ammunition was transported by a private company in a van trailer.

The German armed forces reported that 10 thousand live cartridges of 9 mm X19 caliber (for pistols), 9.9 thousand blank cartridges of 5.56 mm X45 caliber (for rifles) and 15 pyrotechnic (smoke) cartridges were stolen.

The media found out that the ammunition was stolen at night while the car was parked, but the theft was discovered only after the car arrived at the barracks in Burg.

The theft and search for missing cartridges are currently underway.

Spiegel writes that a civilian transport company left a secret cargo overnight in an unguarded parking lot, and “several boxes” of ammunition belonging to the German armed forces disappeared.

Journalist sources in the Bundeswehr consider an accidental theft unlikely. They suggested the car carrying ammunition was under surveillance and the criminals sprang into action when the driver made an “unscheduled stop” in Burgh.

From the Bundeswehr's point of view, the transport company “ignored safety regulations” when transporting ammunition, Spiegel reports. According to the agreement, there must be two drivers on each such route, and one of them must monitor the vehicle at all times, even if it is parked.

A preliminary investigation showed that the overnight stop was not planned, the media writes.
