The canvas measuring 105.5 by 72.5 centimeters, found in September 2024 during the inventory and sale of a private property in Paris, was awarded for the exact amount of 2.94 million euros, writes Agerpres.
Although the painter made several paintings for the church, the work sold on Sunday was probably intended for a private collector.
Purchased by the painter William Bouguereau (1825-1905) or his daughter, Henriette Vincens-Bouguereau (1857-1913), who “maybe they were aware” of its importance, but “they didn't share it”, the painting remained in their mansion and family until recently, when they decided to sell it,” explained the organizers of the auction, Osenat house.
The painting sold at auction has been missing since 1613 and recently rediscovered, along with other paintings by the famous painter.
