Germany must rethink its role in a world where alliances are becoming less and less predictable, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned in parliament on Wednesday in the context of negotiations on the US plan to end the war in Ukraine.

– The geopolitical chessboard is changing rapidly. Alliances are changing faster than previously imagined, said the German Defense Minister.

For Germany, the European Union and NATO, this means, according to Pistorius, the need to “redefine their place on the geopolitical chessboard and redefine their role in the coming years.”

As Pistorius noted, “it is not known what alliances we can still count on and how long they will last.”

Earlier on Wednesday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in the Bundestag that Europe is not a puppet and decisions on European affairs require its consent. He condemned Russia as the only aggressor in the war in Ukraine and announced continued aid to Ukraine.

The US peace plan for Ukraine was made public last week, but was criticized by Ukraine and its European allies, who said it played too much into Russia's hands. As a result of negotiations conducted since the weekend, nine points were removed, although several issues, especially possible territorial concessions, still need to be agreed.
