Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed outrage. “This type of violence… breeds and causes fear,” he said, announcing a “strong police presence” and tighter road traffic control.
Johnson added that the city was preparing for possible “teen takeovers”, i.e. spontaneous gatherings of teenagers downtown that were reported on social media.
As a result, approximately 700 additional officers and social workers were mobilized. “We had 700 additional officers… CVI staff were also there,” the mayor explained.

Authorities reported 18 arrests for curfew violations and assault. However, no suspect involved in the shootings has been arrested so far.
According to ABC News, some participants of the events in the city center announced that they still intend to celebrate despite the tragedy. – Nothing can stop me from coming to celebrate the holidays – said one of the participants of the ceremony.
To keep the center under close supervision in response to the incidents, the city plans to deploy a total of 1,000 officers there. It is expected to add 300 more to the current 700. According to the Chicago Tribune, by the end of October, in 2025, the city had recorded 359 homicides.
