The European Parliament voted on Tuesday in Strasbourg to support the protection clause for agricultural products in the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. 483 MEPs were in favor, 102 were against and 67 abstained.

The mechanism will be activated when the prices of sensitive products, such as beef or poultry, fall by 5%.
The trade agreement with Mercosur will introduce customs preferences for exporters of products such as beef, poultry, dairy products, sugar and ethanol from four South American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. In turn, the markets of these countries will open to European industry.
A safeguard clause is usually added to trade agreements, but in the case of Mercosur, the European Commission has proposed a strengthened mechanism. (PAP)
