Folk calendar
Fedotov day
The day got its name in honor of one of the holy martyrs, whose memory the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates on this date. Theodotus was one of 30 Christians who suffered for their faith in the 3rd century in Melitene.
On Fedot (Theodotus) peasant women in Russian villages began to spin, and before starting work they turned to the saint with a prayer for help in their work, since they considered him the patron of women's needlework.
At this time, ice rose on the rivers and lakes. People remarked: “Fedot leads the way.” Freeze-up, as a rule, was long-awaited. It meant, firstly, the beginning of ice fishing; secondly, and much more importantly, the beginning of travel along icy rivers. “The rivers are covered with ice – the winter roads are open,” people said. At the same time, ice began to fall, and it was necessary to walk carefully. “Fedot will put ice on your forehead,” they joked about this.
Ice and snow were used to judge the future harvest. If the ice on the rivers rose in piles, and snow mounds formed on the roads, this foreshadowed that the next summer would be a fruitful one.
On this day, children were asked riddles about ice. For example, these: “It flowed and flowed and lay under the glass”; “It doesn’t burn in fire, it doesn’t drown in water”; “I am water, and I swim on water.”
