Folk calendar

Oatmeal, Yarilo with oatmeal, Yarilo with a harrow.

Yarilo is a mythological character whose name the ancient Slavs associated with the sun and fertility. According to legend, on this day God took up the plow and harrow, checking whether they were ready for spring field work. The peasants did the same – they inspected the equipment. Accordingly, the work of the blacksmiths increased – zealous owners carried tools for repair.

On this day, the bunting bird was revered, which was reputed to be the harbinger of imminent warmth. The women baked “ovsyaniki” – oatmeal cookies.

The arrival of the bunting on this day promised a quick onset of warmth. People said that on this day there is no shelter for the snow from Yarila, he drowns it, sparing no effort. They also noted: “A lot of snow – a lot of bread; a lot of water – a lot of grass”; “If the snow blows up, there will be more grain; if the water spills, there will be more hay.” However, the weather was still changeable, as evidenced by the following saying: “It flows from above, it freezes from below.”
