The Republic of Moldova, among the countries with the best tourism performances: “An increasingly attractive destination”

The Republic of Moldova is in the top 10 destinations with the best tourist performances recorded in the first half of 2025, registering a 62% increase in the number of tourists compared to 2019, the period before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to World Tourism Organization data.

According to the figures of the World Tourism Organization, the top is led by Albania and Uzbekistan, the third place being occupied by the Republic of Moldova. These three countries are followed by Malta, Andorra, Norway, Serbia, North Macedonia, Denmark and Greece.

Officials of the National Tourism Office (ONT) from the Republic of Moldova state that “these results confirm Moldova's potential to become an increasingly attractive destination on the European tourism map, an authentic, safe and sustainable destination”.
“The Government of the Republic of Moldova through the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Moldova and in collaboration with the profile associations in the field of tourism, local public authorities and international partners, continues the efforts of sustainable development and intelligent promotion of tourism, in accordance with the Transition Path in Tourism of the European Union and the priorities of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)”ONT representatives noted on the Internet.
Nationality of tourists
According to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) from the neighboring country, between January and June 2025, 37,100 foreigners visited the Republic of Moldova through travel agencies, the number being almost 45% higher compared to the same period of the previous year.
“In January-June 2025, there was an increase in the number of foreign people who visited the Republic of Moldova through travel agencies and tour operators – by 44.8% compared to January-June 2024 and amounted to 37.1 thousand visitors. The majority of visitors (about 95.0%) were day trippers (day visitors), who arrived for rest, recreation and leisure purposes”, detailed the NBS employees.
The NBS officials claim that most tourists, i.e. 65%, are from Romania. They are followed by Italians and Turks with 21.7% and 2.0% respectively.
“In January-June 2025 compared to January-June 2024, there was an increase in both the number of tourist-days (by 1.6 times) and the average length of stay of foreign tourists in the country – from 4.0 days to 4.7 days”concluded the employees of the National Bureau of Statistics.
However, the NBS did not provide data on the total number of tourists, including those who visit the neighboring country on their own, without resorting to tourist services.
