Tragedy at a seniors home in Bosnia. At least 10 people died in the fire


A tragic fire in a nursing home located in Tuzla (northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina) occurred on November 5, in the evening. The fire broke out on the 7th floor of a building inhabited by people with disabilities. So far, 10 people have been confirmed dead and at least 20 have been hospitalized. According to local media, the number of injured may be much higher.

“The injured were taken to the University Clinical Center in Tuzla. Among them, in addition to the facility's residents, were also police officers, firefighters, medical staff and employees of the Retirement Home in Tuzla,” the management of the nursing home said in an interview with the Bosnian website klix.ba.

There were bedridden residents in the nursing home

“Everything started to break,” says one of the center's residents, Ruza Kajic, in an interview with the Bosnian BHRT television. A resident of the third floor of the building says that she heard disturbing noises moments before the fire broke out. “I looked out the window and saw burning things falling from above. I ran into the corridor. On the upper floors there were people chained to beds,” says the woman. She managed to escape from the building in time.

Investigators are investigating the cause of a fire at a nursing home in Bosnia

The police have not yet published official information about the cause of the fire. Representatives of the services informed that an investigation will be carried out as soon as the situation on site is safe.

The Prime Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nermin Niksic, was quoted by BHRT as calling it a “catastrophe of enormous proportions”. Representatives of the country's authorities also expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
