A plane operating a Ryanair Bergamo – Cluj Napoca flight on Monday evening had problems after landing and remained on the runway, forcing other planes to land in Sibiu, writes BoardingPass.
The reason why the Ryanair airliner plane stayed on the runway after landing was a medical emergency, according to information from the civil aviation news site.
One of the plane's pilots declared an emergency minutes before landing, notifying air traffic controllers that the other pilot was “incapacitated,” without giving further details.
He also requested medical assistance and emergency teams arrived at the Ryanair plane immediately after it landed and stopped on the runway. BoardingPass sources say the pilot was picked up unconscious, but his condition is currently unknown.
“Unfortunately, the aircraft from Bergamo declared an emergency, because the co-pilot got sick and the plane stayed on the runway to give her first aid. The ambulance came, gave her first aid and she was transported to the hospital,” said Cluj-Napoca Airport director David Ciceo for Cluj News.
“The passengers were disembarked safely. The planes from Rome and Lisbon were diverted to Sibiu, and then returned and landed at Cluj Airport. Cluj Airport was closed for about an hour. Flights were then resumed and everything is fine at this time (morning),” he added.
About 45 minutes after landing, a SMURD ambulance left the airport with its beacon on, according to the local paper.
Almost 50 minutes after landing, the Ryanair airliner was towed from the runway, and the runway was later reopened to air traffic, almost half an hour earlier than scheduled.
Because of this event, which took place at 22:44 local time, two planes that were going to land at “Avram Iancu” airport in Cluj Napoca were diverted to Sibiu airport. It was about the Airbus A320s operating the Wizz Air low-cost airline flights W63386 from Rome (Italy) and W63410 Lisbon (Portugal).
The return flight, Ryanair FR2683 Cluj Napoca – Bergamo (Italy) took off at 02:58 local time, with a delay of more than three hours and the plane and flight crew brought from Bucharest, BoardingPass also wrote.
