Campbell, who was paralyzed down his right side, was attacked after Dawson hailed an Uber shortly before midnight. According to the investigation, Dawson initially said he wanted to visit a friend, then said he just wanted to “get some fresh air” and enjoy the ride.
She later claimed she woke up in the back seat as the man tried to touch her, at which point she allegedly stabbed him several times. After the attack, Dawson allegedly removed the victim's body from the car and returned home.
She was arrested in her own home
Concerned that his son was missing and knowing that he had limited mobility on his right side, Campbell's father called the police. The investigation led to locating the driver's phone, and law enforcement arrived at Dawson's apartment, where she was arrested.
Dawson is a well-known shot putter who qualified for the Paris Olympics last year and is a member of the Indiana University track and field team through 2021. If convicted, she faces many years in prison.
