On December 28, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland plans to open two checkpoints in early November – in Bobrowniki and Kuznica. At the same time, he stated that Poland’s border with Belarus is now “the most guarded in Europe.”
Ruginienė informed that on October 29 she discussed the situation on the border with Belarus with Tusk during a “very detailed, exhaustive conversation.”
According to the Lithuanian prime minister, they decided that Tusk would postpone the opening of the border with Belarus.
“This means that we are coordinating actions together, and for today the borders will be closed in both Poland and Lithuania,” Ruginiene emphasized.
At the same time, she noted that there are “first reactions from Belarus.”
Lithuania has completely closed its border with Belarus due to balloons carrying contraband flying from Belarusian territory.
Context
Poland closed the border against the background of the Russian-Belarusian exercises “West 2025”, which took place from September 12 to 16.
After the completion of the Zapad 2025 exercise, Poland did not open its border with Belarus due to security risks.
On the night of September 18, Polish border guards recorded increased activity of Belarusian and Russian drones that were trying to violate Polish airspace.
On the night of September 25, Polish border guards opened two checkpoints on the border with Belarus: “Brest – Terespol” (for cars) and “Kozlovichi – Kukuryki” (for freight transport), as well as three railway checkpoints: Grodno – Kuznitsa-Bialostotskaya, Svisloch – Semenovka and Brest – Terespol.
Tusk said on October 28 that if the situation requires re-closing Poland’s border with Belarus, he would “without hesitation” make such a decision.
