Mazzherin served in the OMON “Obereg” special unit of the Russian Guard, which operated near Kiev at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
“Based on the collected evidence and testimony of eyewitnesses to the events, the Office of the Prosecutor General opened criminal proceedings against the servicemen of the unit, in particular for violations of the laws and customs of war,” the State Unitary Enterprise of the Ministry of Defense indicated.
As early as April 2022, Ukrainian military intelligence identified by name all suspects of war crimes from Obereg and “planned punitive measures,” the report notes.
Context
After the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, Irpen, Gostomel, Bucha and other settlements in the suburbs of Kyiv became an area of intense fighting.
Russian troops, in an attempt to encircle Kyiv, captured populated areas of the region, destroyed infrastructure and committed massive crimes against civilians: looting, violence, kidnappings and murders, with children among the victims.
After the liberation of the Kyiv region on April 2, it became known about large-scale killings, in particular in Bucha, where over 33 days of occupation more than 9 thousand war crimes were committed and more than 1.4 thousand civilians were killed, including 37 children, the office of the President of Ukraine noted.
