A dam in the Russian city of Belgorod near the border with Ukraine was damaged by Ukrainian drones, Russian authorities announced Monday, according to German news agency DPA.
The water level in the artificial lake has dropped by 1 meter, the Federal Agency for Water Resources of the Russian Federation announced on Monday, as quoted by TASS.
Regional governor Viaceslav Gladkov urged residents whose homes are located downstream of the dam to exercise caution.
The commander of Ukraine's drone forces, Robert Brovdi, confirmed the attacks on the dam on Sunday. Water from the river flooded Russian positions near the village of Grafovka, he said.
From there, the river flows into Ukrainian territory, where Russian troops held a small bridgehead near Vovciansk since 2024, Agerpres notes.
International humanitarian law prohibits attacks on dams or other objects whose damage may unleash destructive forces, except when they are not used for their normal purpose but to support acts of war.
Russian troops blew up the Kahovka dam in the summer of 2023, causing a huge tidal wave that flooded large areas of southern Ukraine. There were many casualties then.
Russia has also targeted hydroelectric plants located on the Dnieper River.
