OpenAI Releases ChatGPT Atlas, a New Web Browser Built Around Its AI Chatbot / What Happened to Google Immediately After Launch

American technology company OpenAI, led by tech entrepreneur Sam Altman, on Tuesday launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser built around its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, according to The Guardian.
“Introducing our new browser – ChatGPT Atlas,” the company announced on Tuesday on X.
The browser is designed to provide a more personalized web experience and includes a ChatGPT sidebar that allows users to ask questions or interact with different aspects of each site they visit, as demonstrated in the video released with the announcement.

Atlas is now available globally on Apple's Mac operating system and will soon be available on Windows, iOS and Android, according to OpenAI's announcement.
Users can open the ChatGPT sidebar and ask to “summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from any site,” according to the company's website.
The company also started rolling out a preview of a virtual assistant called “Agent Mode” in the premium versions. Agent Mode allows users to ask ChatGPT to perform “end-to-end” tasks such as “researching and shopping for a trip.”
The browser allows ChatGPT to edit and modify the highlighted text. An example on the site shows an email with highlighted text and a suggestion: “Make it sound more professional.”
The company says users have complete control over their privacy settings: “You control what it remembers about you, how your data is used, and the privacy settings you apply while browsing.”
OpenAI is not the first company to release an AI web browser. Google, for example, has integrated parts of its Gemini AI model into Chrome.
Other companies, such as Perplexity AI, have also released AI browsers.
Google shares fell 4% immediately after the OpenAI announcement, with investors fearing a threat to its main browser, Chrome, the world's most popular.
