The vacuum cleaner broke – but the carpet became cleaner than my neighbor’s: how I removed dust and dirt without water, equipment and nerves

Everyone has experienced the situation where the carpet looks dull, smells musty, or collects dust, but there is no vacuum cleaner at hand. Many people think that you can’t do anything without technology, but in fact everything can be solved in 10 minutes with the help of two simple ingredients from the kitchen cabinet.

Do not wet the carpet with water. This will cause mold and increase the smell. Instead, use 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, or just more baking soda if you don't have cornstarch. Mix well and sprinkle the mixture evenly over the carpet, especially under furniture and in corners.

Leave for 15–20 minutes. During this time, soda will absorb dust, grease and unpleasant odors, and starch will help collect small debris from the pile. Then collect the powder with a soft bristle brush or dry microfiber. Movements should be light, in the direction of the pile.

If your carpet is light-colored and you're concerned about stains, test the mixture on an inconspicuous area. And for freshness, you can add 2-3 drops of essential oil directly to the baking soda before applying.

After just one such treatment, the carpet becomes lighter, softer and smells clean.

Question and answer:

How to clean a carpet without a vacuum cleaner?
Sprinkle a mixture of baking soda and cornstarch onto the carpet, let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, then scrub away with a brush or dry rag. Baking soda will absorb dust and odors.

Why can't you wash your carpet with water at home?
Water will not dry completely inside the pile, especially on the lining. This causes mold, a putrid odor and deterioration of the carpet backing.

Is the method suitable for children's carpets?
Yes. Baking soda and starch are safe, hypoallergenic and do not leave toxic residues. Ideal for rooms where children play.
