Flames and panic on Air China plane: flight diverted after battery in hand luggage catches fire

An Air China flight was diverted on Saturday (October 18) after a battery in a passenger's carry-on caught fire, authorities and the airline said.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, on board flight CA139, which was departing from Hangzhou to Incheon International Airport in South Korea.
According to Air China's statement, a lithium battery spontaneously ignited in a passenger's hand luggage, stored in the overhead compartment, according to Le Figaro.

The crew immediately handled the situation according to procedures and no one was injured.
The plane was diverted to Shanghai Pudong International Airport to ensure the safety of the flight.
Videos taken by passengers show flames and black smoke in the luggage compartment. In the images, a passenger can be seen trying to put out the fire.
