Drones and air defense in the EU. Key changes until 2027

As part of the new strategy, according to Bloomberg, the EU intends to implement 40 percent by the end of 2027. its defense procurement in a coordinated manner. This is more than double the current level of cooperation between Member States.
“Authoritarian states are increasingly interfering in our societies and economies,” we read in the document cited by Bloomberg.
We also read in it that tThe EU's radical allies are shifting their focus to other regions of the world, and a militarized Russia remains a persistent threat to Europe's security for the foreseeable future.
The proposal, developed by the European Commission, assumes that Member states should coordinate their defense spending more closely and quickly create coalitions that will enable the development of new military programs. The document emphasizes that these actions must start within the next year if Europe is to achieve combat readiness by 2030.
The proposal will be officially presented on Thursday, and EU leaders will discuss it at a summit in Brussels next week.
“Tomorrow we will propose clear goals and milestones to close capability gaps and accelerate defense investment in member states,” European Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier said in a statement.
Despite the increase in the EU's collective defense budget, which has almost doubled since 2021 – from €218 billion to a projected €392 billion in 2025 – military spending remains largely uncoordinated. The document points out that the lack of cooperation between member states limits Europe's ability to quickly rearm.
The EU plan, although subject to change, is a response to growing geopolitical tensions and the need to strengthen the continent's defense capabilities in the face of new challenges.
