Over 182,500 travelers from all over the world took part in this year's 28th edition of the plebiscite. Their choice fell on Valletta, the smallest capital of Europe, which delighted the jurors with its beautiful architecture, atmospheric streets and unique cultural heritage. The city, founded in the 16th century by the Knights of St. Jana, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and has been attracting history and art lovers for years.
As the organizers emphasize, Valletta is a city that “tells a story on every corner, combining tradition with modernity.” Tourists also appreciated the fact that the capital of Malta is a popular film setting – it has appeared, among others, in productions such as “Gladiator” or “Game of Thrones”.
In a press release from the Warsaw office of the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), it was emphasized that the distinction is the result of many years of investment in culture, heritage and tourist infrastructure. Carlo Micallef, president of the MTA, expressed hope that the award would attract even more travelers to Malta. In 2022, the island was visited by 264,000 people. tourists from Poland, and forecasts for 2025 assume exceeding the barrier of 300,000.
“Valletta's success is the result of deliberate actions that have transformed the city into a living showcase of Maltese identity,” Micallef said. In turn, Ian Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta, emphasized that Valletta is a place that “welcomes travelers with unique experiences every day.”
