Former British ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson was arrested on Monday by London police on charges of abuse of public office, AFP, AP and dpa reported. In September 2025, Mandelson was removed from office over his ties to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“Officers arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of abuse of public office,” London police said in a statement, without identifying the person arrested in accordance with British law.
The BBC and Sky News published photos showing Mandelson, 72, leaving his home in central London with a man and a woman who escorted him to an unmarked vehicle.
Documents from the Epstein investigation, released by US authorities in late January, suggest that Mandelson accepted money from him and also passed on confidential British government information to him. In early February, the police initiated a criminal investigation against him on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
Mandelson, 72, was a minister in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and in 2004-08 EU trade commissioner. He has been a member of the House of Lords since 2008. Shortly after Labor returned to power in 2024, Starmer appointed Mandelson as ambassador to the US. He held it for only seven months – from February to September 2025. He was dismissed when it was revealed that his relationship with Epstein lasted longer than was previously known. (PAP)
