Peru parliamentarians invested the president of the Congress, Jose Jeri, in the position of new president of the country, at no time after voting unanimously the dismissal of President Dina Boluarte, one of the most unpopular state leaders in the world, reports Reuters.
The vote and the investment ceremony took place shortly after midnight, just a few hours after the blocks of the whole political spectrum presented for the first time motions for the dismissal of Boluarte on the grounds of moral incapacity.
Jeri, who becomes the seventh president of Peru after 2016, reported that he will adopt a harsh approach to increasing insecurity, one of the main criticisms to Boluarte. He addressed the Congress carrying a scarf with the national flag.
“The main enemy is there, on the streets: the criminal gangs. We must declare war on crime,” he said.
Jose Jeri (38 years old), a member of the Conservative Party Somos Peru, who became president of Congress in July, joins some of the youngest heads of state.
Lots of people gathered in front of the Congress and the Ecuador Embassy, where it was rumored that Boluarte could request asylum, some of them being in a festive disposition, waving flags, dancing and singing on musical instruments.
Shortly after the Congress voted for its dismissal, Boluarte gave a speech at the Presidential Palace, in which he acknowledged that the same Congress that had in The end of 2022 has now voted to dismiss it, “with the implications it has for the stability of democracy in our country.”
“At every moment, I appealed to the unit,” she said.
On Thursday night, parliamentarians from all over the political spectrum convened Boluarte to defend themselves in front of Congress the same evening. She did not arrive, and the parliamentarians had enough votes to continue with a rapid dismissal procedure.
Boluarte, 63 years old, was deeply despised, being appreciated, according to polls, by only 2-4% of the population because of the accusations that it would have illegally take advantage of its function and that it would be responsible for the lethal repression in favor of its predecessor. It deny any illegal deed.
His dismissal continues the series of frequent changes in leaders in this country in Andes. Three former leaders are currently behind bars.
